Garage Floor Protection: The Options

By Chet Davis

If you've been wondering how to improve your garage, you might not think that there are many options. After all, aren't garages just plain, boring rooms? This may be true, but there are still a few ways you can spruce up that old garage.

One great way to improve your garage is by updating the flooring. The floor of your garage attracts all sort of spills, stains, and other unsightly marks. Not a pretty site. How can you fix this?

Fortunately, there are many options on the out there for garage flooring. Most of these are quite easy to install by yourself, though professional help is often available. In this article, we will briefly look at each of the options, discussing the pros and cons of each one.

Mats are the first option we will look at. These are simply vinyl mats that you roll out across your garage floor and cut to fit. These do have the drawback of holding in moisture and liquids, but they still provide good protection from impacts and spills.

Secondly, we have garage floor tiles. Like the mats, but available in convenient interlocking tiles. These are a little easier to install, and still provide good protection. These are more expensive than mats are, however. Just something to keep in mind.

The third option is epoxy. Applying an epoxy paint coating to your garage floor can really help extend its life. To do this, simply clean the floor, prime it, and spread the coating across the floor. It takes a while to cure, but once it is done, you have a floor that will completely lock out moisture. This is a very good option for many.

Obviously, there is not one right way to finish your garage floor. All these options are an excellent way to improve the utility of your garage while increasing the value of your home. All in all, a great home improvement project for anyone to take on.
